Mission of the Decalogue Society

The Decalogue Society is a bar association of attorneys who are interested in maintaining ties with the Jewish people. Members are located primarily in Illinois, as well as other states and Israel. The Society's members seek to combine aspects of their lives unique to being both attorneys and Jews. Decalogue serves as a crucial and unique forum to combine those attributes in the activities, goals, and strength of a bar association.

The Society maintains a broad range of programs to benefit our members, the Jewish community, the legal community, and the general public. Decalogue is proud of its history of remarkable achievements since 1934 and promises a future of continuing devotion to its worthy goals and principles.

Our Goals

1. Devote attention to special problems and opportunities available to its members as attorneys and Jews and to enhance the goals of its members.

2. Raise the standards of the bar and educate the public to better understand and appreciate the function and status of the lawyer in a free society.

3. Devote itself to special problems or opportunities, the solving or addressing of which will benefit our constituencies and bring increased dignity and honor to all members of the legal profession and appreciation for the inspiration provided by our Jewish heritage.

4. Maintain vigilance against public practices which are anti-social, discriminatory, or oppressive, and join with other minorities for the protection of rights and privileges.

5. Assist in resolution of peculiarly or particularly Jewish legal controversies.

6. Foster friendly relations, networking, and goodwill among its members, and between its members and other members of the bar, other ethnic bar associations, the courts, and the public.

7. Provide assistance to its members in their professional development.

8. Encourage and stimulate Jewish ideals and culture, particularly as they impact the practice and study of law.

9. Increase awareness, availability, understanding and acceptance of and education about methods of addressing, in secular law, legal issues affecting Jews in aspects of their religious lives.

10. Participate in the dissemination of information and active interest in the field of social action and render useful community service as authorized by Decalogue's Board of Managers.

11. Assist in the cooperation with and among worthwhile Jewish movements and organizations.

12. Provide financial and networking assistance to Jewish students desiring to study law and involve those law students in their professional and Jewish communities, through programs and example.

13. Advance and improve the law, the administration of justice, and the legal profession and cooperate with other bar associations to attain those objectives.

14. Provide legal education to lawyers to help make its members and other members of the bar better informed practitioners of the law.

15. Cooperate as lawyers, citizens, and Jews in worthy movements for the public welfare.

16. Furnish legal aid to the indigent and the needy.

17. Assist deserving members of the bar who may be in need of financial or professional aid and to set apart and administer for all such purposes its own funds or funds received from others.
